What do you enjoy most about cycle touring?
It is the opportunity to enjoy each country at ground level, meet the people, experience the local culture, history and delicious cuisine in a way that you would never do staying in a 5-star hotel or doing a traditionally conducted tourist tour. As a bonus, you will get fitter, have fun and meet interesting and inspiring people from all over the globe.
How long have you been riding and where have you traveled?
In the last four years since I started riding, I have been fortunate to have traveled across Switzerland, The Big Island of Hawaii, The Philippines, Taiwan, China, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Indonesia and six different rides in various parts of beautiful Thailand.
What training do you normally do before a tour?
This is a challenge. Unfortunately, I don’t have the opportunity to do long training rides in preparation for an overseas tour (often 800 km to 1,000 km in length). What I do normally is ride for 40 minutes a day, five days a week around home. Typically it takes me 3 to 4 days riding on the tour to allow my fitness to build up, after that I am fine. I am now 72 years of age, that obviously has a bearing on your fitness and speed, but the tour is not a race and SpiceRoads caters for all fitness levels very well.
Do you have advice for anyone embarking on their first SpiceRoads Tours?
Yes, I certainly do……As Nike says…JUST DO IT! and you will be rewarded with a rich adventure and experience that you will never forget!
I only took up riding four years ago at age 68 years of age and have now ridden across most of Asia. I am not a gifted athlete, so if I can do it, then so can you!
To prepare, you need a basic level of fitness, which can be achieved by riding at home for one hour per day, for about six months before the tour. And if you have the time, one longer ride a week at around 50 km. I would also select a SpiceRoads Tour that is rated at no more than ‘3 chilli’s,’ and you should be fine.
Remember the road tour is not a race and at any time during the ride if you are affected by the heat, the hills, or your lack of fitness it is no disgrace to ride in the support van for as long and often as you require.
SpiceRoads are such a professional company to ride with and everything you can think of is taken care of magnificently.
JUST DO IT. YOU WILL BE SO HAPPY YOU DID!
