Looking for the next exciting destination to take your road bike, look no further than Taiwan.
When Portuguese sailors first landed, they named it Ihla Formosa, which means ‘beautiful island’. Those first interactions between East and West, along with mainland and regional influences, have made Taiwan a unique gem, with a plethora of on and off bike experiences for you.
So from a fascinating aboriginal culture to its historic significance with China, colonial Europe to the stunning landscapes and natural wonders, Taiwan should definitely be on your HIT list!
Here’s why!
1.PERFECT ROADS
A road biker’s dream: roads are smoothly paved, tough-but-rewarding climbs and exciting descents. There is also very little traffic. And for those that prefer rougher terrain, Taiwan offers no end of off-road trails for a challenge or a change of pace.
2. SPECTACULAR SCENERY
Cycling through glorious countryside, with the backcloth of Taiwan’s spectacular mountain ranges, will take your breath away. Turn the other way and marvel at the expansive sea views!
3. TAROKO GORGE
An impressive 19 km long canyon composed mainly of metamorphic rocks, often described as the ‘Jewel of Taiwan’. Wonder at the formations of marble and limestone while biking across and along the roaring Leewoo Ho River.
4. VARIETY OF ECO-ZONES
From dramatic mountain ranges, to impressive gorges, to fertile farms and great beaches, this 400 km long country has it all. And because of its size and excellent infrastructure, you can check out more sites than you can believe!
5. THE PEOPLE
The first inhabitants of the island share an ethnic link with the peoples in the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia and once had over 20 distinct languages. Taiwanese culture has since been influenced by a curious combination of traditional Chinese practices, modern commercialism, with a dash of Japanese flavour. They are also known to be one of the friendliest people in Asia.
6. HOT SPRINGS
Taiwan is blessed with natural hot springs with locations from all across the island. This means you are never too far away from a nice hot soak after a day’s riding, to sooth the muscles in preparation for the next day of riding.
