When did you go on you go on you first cycle adventure?
The first SpiceRoads adventure I went on was the 14 day Ho Chi Minh Trail back in 2010 that followed parts of the war-era trail and explored old and new Vietnam.
How many SpiceRoads tours have you been on?
I have been on seven! Ho Chi Minh Trail, Bangkok to Phuket, Hoi An to Siem Reap, Central Thailand Explorer, Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai, Cycling Chaing Mai to Bangkok and right now I am on the Saigon to Hanoi tour!
What do you look for when you are choosing a trip?
It is all about getting off the main tourist trails, being challenged with long distances and a few hills. Getting exposed to real culture and local foods and interacting with local people.
What do you enjoy about bicycle touring?
I enjoy piling on some kms on my cycling app, getting some good exercise and improving my fitness level. It is also great to meet local people doing everyday activities like going to school, visiting markets to buy their local groceries!
How much riding do you do before a ride?
I tend to ride around 100km per week at home.
Do you have any advice for someone that is looking to go on a cycling adventure for the first time?
Just do it! Why stay on the backpacker trail following hordes of people eating and drinking in the same places – so boring. Go hang out with locals and the SpiceRoads guides who will educate you on culture, history, religion, real food etc. Don’t worry too much about fitness as you can always ride in the bus!
Congratulations Alan, great fun, beautiful Country and excellent group!
